Tuning: E A D G B E
As similarly tabbed (to be read, nearly copied exactly) by bigmadhabib who really did do some great work, and
really all the leg work and deserves all the credit.
The only differences are the placement of the chords with the lyrics. In this song, Waits places the vowels
of his words on the chord changes. The chord changes also drop between the lines sometimes when he is not
singing so I threw those over hanging at the ends of the lines rather than at the beginning of the lyric
where Waits would otherwise already be singing. It feels as though it is easier to sight read if you will.
bigmadhabib says, "The chords are generally played with a bass line playing the tonic note and the note a
fourth down on 1 and 3. The Fm chord is started by sliding up to the 8th fret on the A string. Enjoy." Upon
doing so you really get that feel that Waits, Ribot and Taylor create. Good to note, well done bigmadhabib.
One may find this song easier to play if tuned down a half step, and then playing everything up a half step to
get an Abmaj7 in the common position of A, and also to get the fourth down from the Abmaj7's tonic, your Eb.
Waits does from, time to time, tune down a half step.
Great song, great fun and again, big shout-out to bigmadhabib. I hope you don't mind my touch ups to your
tab. You really deserve the credit.
Corrector's suggestion: play Abmaj7 instead of Ab. Just take the standart Cm shape and put your index finger
on the fourth fret of the low E-string. Also, the Abmaj7 is played for two bars. This is important to note,
since the timing of the lyrics is a little weird.
