Note that the song is only in Fm when the capo is on the first fret. without a capo it's in Em, on two it's in F#m and so on. for the 'strumming pattern' i play two root notes in a dotted quarter eighth rhythm and then strum the chord. if you listen to The Civil Wars cover of the song that will make sense.
