Here's an underrated Don Henley song from "Inside Job". Like many of Don's
songs, this is open to various interpretations, but the most obvious is that
it deals with grieving for a friend's suicide. Great lyrics, good song. The
chord progression is a lot like Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here", but the
two songs are otherwise worlds apart.
I'm not 100% sure of the ending chord on the bridge, but I can vouch for the
accuracy of the rest of the song.
Damn It, Rose
Written by Don Henley and Stan Lynch
Chords used: Am, F, Dm7, F, G, Gsus2, Gm, D# and G#
The main verse riff is Em / G twice, then Em / Am7 / C / D
(the G alternates with Gsus2).
Listen to the record for the timing.
AmMaybe just a Fgood night's sleep
AmWould've changed your troubled Fmind
AmFrom that rather permanent decisDm7ion
F G / Gsus2
So tragic - so unkind
AmNow pain is what you've Fgiven
AmAnd sleep is what you'll Fget
AmSo far away from that sweet Dm7baby child
C (don't play D here)
Who hardly knew you yet...
Interlude: just strum the same pattern as for the verses
Am / F
Am / F
AmNow he'll grow up to be a Ffighter
AmFull of anger, full of Fshame
AmJust like all the other haunted Dm7children
F G / Gsus2
Who wonder why they came -
AmAnd he'll be in and out of Ftrouble
AmUntil he stands or till he Ffalls
AmBut there will always be a Dm7shadow there
FNo matter how it goes...Damn it, RoAmse. F Am F
Bridge
GmIs this another cryptic Fmessage,
GmOr some kind of cosmic Fquiz?
GmIf there's a lesson to be D#learnt from this,
Eb (Not sure, but I think it's directly back to Em)
I don't know what it is -
Interlude (same as the above)
Am / F
Am / F
AmYou could've given us the Ffinger
AmMuch more constructively than Fthat
AmNow I sit here with the Dm7MTV
F G / Gsus2
And your bloated Burmese cat
AmWe're being treated to the Fwisdom
AmOf some puffed-up little Ffart
AmDoing exactly what I Dm7used to:
FPretensions to anarchy and art -
AmHe speaks the language of a Fwarrior
AmHe mounts his misinformed atFtack
AmHe wears the clothes of a disDm7senter
FBut there's a logo on his back...
AmAnd it's a hollow reFbellion,
AmLike rebellions mostly Fare
AmIt's just another raging Dm7tempest
FIn a jar...
AmAnd the seasons keep on Fchanging,
AmAnd the wind blows hot and Fcold -
AmWish that you were here with us to Dm7watch this tide
FAs it ebbs and flows....
FDamn it, AmRose. F Am F
Coda: play Em / G repeatedly and fade out.
There you have it! If anyone can figure out the missing chord, please let me
